Configure SMS Users

Prev Next

This article walks Enterprise Admins through configuring SMS services for Microsoft Teams users.

This article covers one step in the overall SMS service configuration process. For a complete overview, see the full guide at SMS Connector Installation Step-by-Step Guide

Before You Begin

  • SMS Service Activation: Your Enterprise account must have the SMS service enabled. Please contact your service provider to add this feature if it's not already active.

  • User Group Membership: If you've restricted access to specific user groups, make sure the target Teams user is a member of one of the listed groups. If no groups have been defined, no further action is required here.

Note to the Service Provider:

Viewing SMS Users

Start by navigating to the Users section of your dashboard. SMS users can be found in one of the following three locations, depending on the services your organization uses:

  • PBX Service: Go to the PBX Users page.

  • Trunk Service: Go to the Trunks > Users page.

  • SMS-Only Service: Go to the SMS > Manage Users page.

Configuring an SMS User

  1. From the applicable Users page, expand the Action …  and click the Manage SMS option.

  2. Fill out the values on the screen.

Enable SMS Service : Select this checkbox to activate SMS service for the user. You can return to this setting at any time to temporarily disable SMS by unchecking the box.

User Type : Leave this field set to Basic User. Currently, this is the only supported user type.

    SMS DIDs:
To assign SMS numbers to the user:

    1. Select one or more numbers from the Unassigned DIDs list.

    2. Click the (arrow button) to move them to the Assigned DIDs list.

  3. Click Submit.

Result:

The user will appear enabled for SMS and assigned the phone number(s).

If need to configure more Teams users for SMS, repeat the procedure above.

If need to assign SMS numbers to a Microsoft Teams team of users, proceed to do so as described Configure SMS Groups.

IMPORTANT

These changes will not be reflected for the Teams user until the relevant connector app is synchronized.

To perform the sync, continue to the next section.

Sync the App to Finalize the Changes

To finalize the phone number assignment, the Microsoft Global Admin (or the provider if granted the proper consent) must sync the app to Microsoft.

SMS Connector App Option

If the enterprise is using the legacy SMS Connector app, go to the Enterprise Dashboard and click the Sync SMS App button. More details about this step is presented in this guide: Deploy the SMS App to a Microsoft Teams Organization

Result:

Once the sync is completed, the user will see new teams in MS Teams that corresponds to the phone number assigned (or the Outlook name if the phone number is stored as mobile contact).

Unified Connector App Option

If the enterprise is using the new Unified Connector App, go to the Enterprise Dashboard and click the Sync Unified App button. More details about this step is presented in this guide: Deploy and Sync the Unified Connector App.

Result:

A success message such as shown below will appear.

No team is created in Microsoft Teams.

When SMS messages are starting to get exchanged, group chats appearing as source(destination) will appear to represent the message exchange.
