This article guides Enterprise Admins in enabling Chat for individual Teams users. It applies to both chat deployment options — the Unified Connector App and federated chat. Enabling Chat is the final setup step for either option.
Before You Begin
Chat must be set up for the enterprise using one of the two options.
Each Teams user needs a Microsoft 365 license that includes SharePoint Online.
Enable Chat for a User
In the Enterprise or Messaging Portal, whichever one you are using, navigate to the Users page.
Locate the user, then click the Actions (⋯) menu.
Select Enable Chat.

What the user sees depends on the deployment option:
Federated chat | Unified Connector App | |
|---|---|---|
After Enable Chat | A personal chat named Connect2Teams Chat appears in the user's Microsoft Teams chat list. From this chat, the user can invite external contacts. | The Unified Connector App becomes available to the user in their Teams app catalog to open and pin. |
After Disable Chat | The Connect2Teams Chat disappears from the user's chat list. | The app remains, but the user can no longer send messages or invite contacts. The AI Messaging Assistant replies with a decline message. |
Share the matching end-user guide with your users: Chatting with Slack users through federated chat (federated chat) or Using the Chat Connector in MS Teams (Unified Connector App).
Disable Chat for a User
To turn chat off for a user, select Disable Chat from the same Actions (⋯) menu on the Users page. The effect depends on the deployment option, as shown in the table above.

Restoring Connect2Teams Chat (federated chat only)
If a user inadvertently deletes their Connect2Teams Chat, restore it by selecting Disable Chat for that user on the Users page, then Enable Chat again.
