Definition of SMS Group

An SMS Group is a set of MS Teams users who can receive and send SMS messages via a shared MS Teams Channel. The group appears as a team in MS Teams. Each member of the team can send and receive messages with the phone numbers assigned to the SMS Group.

Group Texting

SMS Group is not for group texting. To know more about group texting, check this article.

Using SMS Groups in Teams

  1. After the Entreprise Admin syncs the SMS group configuration, the SMS group will now appear in MS Teams client of the members.

  2. Additional details can be seen in the Manage Team option.

As a best practice, do not change membership in MS Teams. Ask your enterprise admin to manage the group in the Enterprise Portal.

Sending SMS using SMS Group

Any group member can send an outbound SMS.

To send a reply or an OUTBOUND SMS,

Option 1: Users can tag the app in the reply. By doing so, the teams user will be replying using the same number that received the SMS. The app name will NOT be included in the reply content.

Option 2: Click on the reply button or on the app to display the composer. The composer allows the Teams user to choose a FROM number. The default number should be the number that received the SMS.

Chatting

The channel can be used to chat within your teams, the same way any other team works in MS Teams.

a. Simply sending messages (not tagging the app or not using the composer) will send messages within the team. This will NOT send an outbound message.

b. You can tag a teams user via @username to notify them about the conversation.
